Keep Heating and Cooling Units Working Properly This Winter

heating-new-jerseyAs old man winter prepares for his big debut, NJ residents should be busy making winter preparations to their home.  You’ll want to ensure all heating units run efficiently before the first frost sets in.

By taking proactive measures, NJ homeowners can lower their energy bills, increase the efficiency and lifespan of their home’s heating and cooling units, and make their property safer.

If you want to heat your NJ home without a glitch this winter, give your HVAC system a thorough inspection.  This can include:

  • Clean or replace the air filter in your furnace for maximum efficiency and improved indoor air quality
  • Remove air conditioners from windows or cover them with insulated liners, to prevent drafts.
  • If you have an older thermostat, replace it with a programmable unit to save on heating costs.
  • Install foam-insulating sheets behind outlets and switch plates on exterior walls to reduce outside airflow.
  • Make sure fans are switched to the reverse or clockwise position, which will blow warm air down to the floor for enhanced energy efficiency and comfort.
  • Flush a hot water heater tank to remove sediment, and check the pressure relief valve to make sure it’s in proper working order.
  • Examine exposed ducts in the attic, basement, and crawl spaces, and use a sealant to plug up any leaks.

If you’re worried about expensive heating bills this winter, The Entech Group Inc., a leader in providing energy, engineering and environmental services in NJ, has tips to help residents lower the cost of heating New Jersey homes.

Tips for Efficient Heating and Cooling in NJ

Maintaining your furnace with a new filter can help keep it running efficiently.  A filter only costs between $3-$10 for most models and makes a difference in your heating bill that adds up over time.  Another small investment to make that can save money on NJ heating costs is insulation.  Most of us know the ‘cold’ areas of our home. It may be a certain window or a specific room in the house that is drafty.  Adding some extra insulation in those areas can help keep cold air out and warm air in.  Insulation can be purchased for as little as $7-$16 in rolls of 22ft or more. Another investment that costs a little more but is incredibly useful is a smart thermostat.  A smart thermostat can be controlled remotely while you are not home or from another room in your house (such as the bedroom).  If you forget to turn the heat down when you leave your house, you can do so remotely so the heat does not run while you are gone.

It is estimated that residents can save around 20% of their heating bill just by making simple changes like the ones outlined above.

NJ homeowners still using oil heating can talk to The Entech Group Inc about converting to energy efficient natural gas. The company provides complete removal of aboveground and underground storage tanks as well as installation of natural gas heating systems.  In areas where natural gas is not available, The Entech Group Inc can replace out of date oil heating equipment with newer, more efficient units.  For information on their heating and cooling services in NJ, please visit

Smart Start Program Offers Heating & Cooling Rebates in NJ

Heating and Cooling NJCommercial property owners are encouraged to have an energy efficient audit performed on their property.  With available incentives and rebates from the state’s Smart Start program available, ensuring a business is utilizing energy efficient equipment can lead to federal tax deductions and other available incentives.

One of the simplest ways to achieve eligibility for Smart Start incentives is to utilize efficient heating & cooling units.  A Federal tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available for any commercial building that could reduce its overall energy consumption by 50% using various energy efficient equipment and measures (as compared to the original building energy consumption).

Heating & Cooling Incentives in NJ

The New Jersey Smart Start program also offers:

  • Financial Incentives towards the purchase and installation of qualified energy efficient equipment including Prescriptive Lighting and Controls, High Efficiency HVAC Units, High Efficiency Gas Water Heaters and Boilers, and Electric Chiller Units. The incentive package is based on the level of efficiency of each piece of equipment.
  • For buildings 50,000 square feet or more, Financial Design Incentives are available to offset the project engineering fees related to the analysis of high efficiency alternatives. An initial incentive of $1,000 is available for a pre-design planning session, as well as $5,000 or more for the design simulation and modeling performed by a design professional to test the performance of the high efficiency alternatives.
  • For buildings 50,000 square feet or less, Technical Design Support is available to assist the design professional when considering the analysis of the high efficiency alternatives. Up to eight hours of design support is offered from a program design manager.
